What We’re Doing in the Calgary Area
In response to Elder Abuse in our community, we have formed the Action Group on Elder Abuse (AGEA). This group is comprised of individuals and agencies concerned about the response to older adults experiencing abuse in Calgary. AGEA does not provide direct service but work together with community members to enhance and coordinate the response to the abuse of older adults in Calgary. Additionally, we work to build a greater capacity within the Calgary community to respond to the abuse of older adults.

The intent of AGEA is not to duplicate similar work underway in existing organizations and groups, but rather to build upon the programs, services and knowledge that are already in place.

AGEA focus areas include:

Enhancing existing services Awareness and education Partnership with policymakers / key influencers Research Development of AGEA’s organizational capacity

Since its inception in January 2004, AGEA has accomplished the following:

Effective engagement of stakeholders in the community Successfully obtained funding for a full-time community development coordinator Organized two elder abuse conferences Developed and implemented a comprehensive education strategy and public awareness campaign on elder abuse Completed an AGEA elder abuse protocol that serves as a model for Calgary-based organizations Developed an AGEA elder abuse resource manual Worked with Calgary community to celebrate first World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, June 15, 2006 (WEAAD) Completed an external evaluation of AGEA’s work Mapped resources, identified gaps in services (an ongoing activity) Collected research and best practices literature (an ongoing activity) Submitted a brief to the Alberta roundtable on Family Violence and Bullying
