1. An Elder Abuse Community Response Steering Group is currently building a plan for a collaborative model for South Western Alberta. Our hope is to bring agencies together to partner in the design and implementation of a community response team. A funding application has been submitted to begin this process by hiring a project coordinator and development of materials including research, a capacity and needs assessment and community protocols. Community meetings with potential partners will occur in September 2008.
2. The Family Violence and Elder Abuse Prevention and Awareness Committee has a multi-faceted and pro-active approach to increasing awareness of family violence and elder abuse in the community.
An ongoing social marketing campaign, updating and developing educational materials and opportunities for community engagement are components of the project. Linkages occur between victims, community, professions and local/ provincial resources and programming. Seniors from First Nations, Immigrant and Faith Communities are being targeted with specific campaigns.
Current Committee initiatives include bus signage, posters, movie theatre advertising, workshops, training and resources to Ministerial Associations, professionals and citizens. Translation services are being utilized to develop locally relevant literature for New Canadians. Focus Groups are underway to develop information and resources for Aboriginal seniors.
