2SLGBTQ+ Older Adults

Our Commitment to 2SLGBTQ+ Older Adults

The Alberta Elder Abuse Awareness Council wholeheartedly believes that every person deserves to age with dignity, safety, and respect. This includes Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexually and gender-diverse people.

We recognize that 2SLGBTQ+ seniors in Alberta may face increased risks of abuse due to a lifetime of discrimination, isolation, and barriers to accessing inclusive supports. Some may feel unsafe disclosing their identity or relationships when seeking help, while others may fear being “outed” in care settings or re-traumatized by systems that have failed them in the past.

We are committed to ensuring that no one is left behind. AEAAC affirms the rights of 2SLGBTQ+ older adults to live free from abuse, neglect, and discrimination, and are actively working to:

  • Create and promote safe, inclusive, and affirming resources and referral pathways for 2SLGBTQ+ older adults
  • Train our team and our partners to understand and respond to the unique forms of abuse that 2SLGBTQ+ seniors may face
  • Collaborate with 2SLGBTQ+ communities and organizations to ensure our work reflects diverse lived experiences
  • Encourage all elder abuse response partners in Alberta to be welcoming, respectful, and inclusive of 2SLGBTQ+ seniors
  • This commitment is not just about inclusion—it’s about justice. Elder abuse affects people of all identities, and so must our response.

If you or someone you know is a 2SLGBTQ+ older adult experiencing abuse or seeking support, we’re here to help—without judgment and with respect.
