Exploring the impact of coercive control on older adults and how we can promote dignity, autonomy, and safety in later life.

Join the Alberta Elder Abuse Awareness Council (AEAAC) for an insightful Lunch & Learn exploring the often-hidden issue of coercive control and its impact on older adults.

Facilitated by Dr. Margaret Isabel Hall, Professor in the School of Criminology at Simon Fraser University and the incoming Dean of the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law at Lakehead University, Ontario.  Dr. Hall is a leading Canadian researcher in the areas of aging, vulnerability, autonomy, legal capacity, and elder law, this session will examine how coercive control can affect the safety, well-being, independence, and dignity of older adults. Dr. Hall’s work has contributed significantly to understanding legal and social responses to the mistreatment of older people and has informed national discussions on elder justice and coercive control in Canada.

Drawing on emerging research and current developments in elder justice, participants will gain a deeper understanding of what coercive control is, how it can present in the lives of older adults, why it can be difficult to recognize, and the unique challenges faced by victims and survivors. The session will also explore opportunities for improving awareness, prevention, policy, and community responses to support older adults experiencing coercive control.

This session is intended for service providers, community organizations, caregivers, and anyone interested in promoting the safety, dignity, and rights of older adults.

By the end of this session, participants will:

  • Develop a deeper understanding of coercive control and how it can present in the lives of older adults.
  • Explore the impact coercive control can have on an older adult’s independence, relationships, and sense of safety.
  • Discover ways to support older adults and connect them with resources that promote dignity, autonomy, and well-being.
